Pique
Primata

What is Pique?

A modular sprint-based framework designed to solve small and big problems, as demands and needs are identified on flight.

In what it differs from standard Design Sprint?

Often a project needs a strategic step to consolidate a clear design direction and a traditional Design Sprint is not enough to provides that.

Pique Primata comes with extra modules, starting with a quick setup before we draw anything and, after a qualitative validation, complementary modules are used to enhance, detail, and deliver the design for technical development.

We start with a call to define objectives, challenges, team and agenda.

Few days collecting information and we are ready to run our strategic workshop which provides directives, limitations and design ideas that will be build for our first validation with real users.

After our first proof of concept we run as many weekly design cycles as needed to evolve the design to a detailed level ready to be developed.

The Circuit

1. Setup & Define

We start with a simple and attainable goal and concluded this step with clear design guidelines, usually full of grounded features.
A intense Strategic Sprint to bring clear aligment between those involved in the project.

2. Build & Validate

With the ideas and solutions of the strategic stage, our team works closely with the project leaders to build a robust prototype as soon as possible, in seek of qualified validations with real users.

3. Refine & Deliver

Based on the validation of the pilot prototype, we started the weekly improvement cycles, where we quickly advance with new functionalities and eventual aesthetic refinements.

Start

After a few days collecting information, we are ready to run our strategic workshop which provides directives, limitations, and design ideas that will be built for the first validation with real users.

3

Build

In 1 to 3 weeks, we build the best high-fidelity prototype as possible to validate objective and subjective insights with real users in the next step.

Dream Tribo

This method format requires expert people with different expertise to perform specific roles during the process. These people will form a strong squad and work together to achieve the project objectives. It is ideal for the squad to have a minimum of five and maximum of seven members, including the facilitator, for everything to work swiftly. Too few people can cause a lack of diverse knowledge, compromising decisions and next steps. Too many people, in the other hand, can overload the process and trigger discussions that lead to nowhere.

[+]
The experts needed are the following: the Strategist – a person with a strategic and holistic business view; the Marketeer – a person with a product marketing expertise; the Sales(wo)man – a person that acts directly with selling good to clients; the Technician – a person that understands products technical needs and means of production; the Creative – generally a designer to shake creative minds up with a user centric view; and finally,
[+]
the Decider, which is the person elected by the group to take decisions and validate each step to go to the next one. Although usually the Decider is also the Strategist, it could be anyone, as long as it is a person who knows very deeply the problem that the squad is working to solve.
[+]
Setting up the Tribo is one of the most important parts of the Pique and needs to be taken as seriously as validations phases. As they will be performing together for several weeks, it is important to list people that will be available through the whole process.

Project Setup

In the first week of the process the Tribo will work together to immerge in the brand essence, detect project challenges, set strategy and tactical actions, explore user needs and pains, map the competitive scenario, to finally define a design concept that will guide the idea generation, prototyping and validation with real users in the second week. In just two weeks, we already have quality feedbacks that can be used to improve the design of solutions.

Base Experiment

The first experiment with real users is the most important one. That is why we dedicate a whole week to, based on the design concept defined in the first week, building and testing the best prototype that will give us quality feedback.

[+]
Just like in the GV Sprint, we only build any prototype after completing the strategic work. But in Pique, instead of one day, we increase the time spent on this building for four days. The first two days are full of quick tasks to individually generate ideas, mesh things up, compile, refine, share, listen, sketch, share more, converge, and finally define what will be prototyped in the next two days.
[+]
The last day is test day. After being built, the sprint prototype will be put to test with real users, and the Squad will observe and note down the relevant behaviors, feedbacks, and perceptions.
Regardless of the feedbacks being positive or negative, the Squad now have enough information to form a solid conclusion, and this allows us to use it in the followings Loops to decide what are the next steps.
[+]
After the second week, the Squad is performing as a single and smarter organism – similar to a brain – and, with the support of real-time documentation, as an augmented intelligence. Now, all the information that emerged from these first two weeks, including validation feedbacks, is neatly stored in an expanded memory environment for fast checking and reference for the next steps. This is what we call Base Knowledge.

Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.

Experiment Loops & Snowball

After the first validation and its conclusions, it is time to go to the next one. You will notice that the Experiment Loop is a bit different from Base Experiment. Instead of going straight to ideation, the Squad will review the Base Knowledge, analyze the hypothesis, check the backlog, refresh weekly challenges, and only then, ideate, prototype, and validate with real users. Every validation in Experiment Loops will generate new information and intelligence to feed and enhance the Base Knowledge.

[+]
Loops are a fast way to develop and validate ideas quickly, accumulating learnings to build more and more robust solutions overtime. The Tribo will notice a progressive increase in the work rhythm, as the gain per working-time grows exponentially.
[+]
However, to avoid fatigue and saturation in the project, it is important to limit the development to a maximum of 12 weeks. After this time, Squad’s stamina begins to fall, and productivity will decrease significantly. 12 weeks is more then enough time to achieve the established project master goal.

Rapid Base Knowledge Improvement

As the Experiment Loops roll, the quality of feedbacks and information stored rapidly increase. After just 3 or 4 Loops, the Base Knowledge will have already grown significantly, allowing for more and more accurate decisions and better solutions. From this point on, the work begins to focus more on the search of solutions for specific features, as most of the main body is already built.

Extra Modules

As mentioned in the beginning, Pique Primata is a modular framework and can go beyond the Setup and Experiment Loops. To approach even more complex design solutions and contexts, there are 3 Extra Modules for different situations.

[+]
Each of the modules serves a specific need: a better prototype for more accurate validation; consulting on building a design team for companies that lack a design department or wish to train their own team to perform in an agile format; technical design deliverables for more complex solutions that need better specification; or documentation to further development with engineering teams and suppliers.

Emancipation

As we approach the resolution of the established master goal, we begin what we call 'the project weaning'. The development team is trained so that they gain autonomy for the further projects, and maybe even assemble a new design team.

Deliver

With the main deliveries and validations carried out, Primata Team performs the detailing and technical documentation of the project, following-up the development for production until its launch.

Polishment

After launch, products and services can still benefit of getting more feedback, but now from a larger user sample. Polishing Loops allows the work on improvements in already established contexts, bringing even more value.

Executive Map

Pique counts on thoroughly designed and organized activities, and each of them has its own working canvas. This canvas context is what we call Executive Map. During work time, this map will help the Squad to follow the right path, working on each activity at a time and organizing information in the right places in real-time. As every input is documented in a logical way, it is easy to go back and check for specific data and knowledge.
